An assistant can only use the passages it is given. Choose what to hand it and watch how the answer changes.
Question: “How many days of parental leave do I get?”
What to notice
- With no passages the assistant guesses from general knowledge. It may sound right and be wrong for your company.
- Give it the right passage and it can answer and point to its source.
- Press “top 1”. The outdated policy scores higher against the question than the current one, so a system that only takes the single best match would hand over the wrong document.
- Irrelevant passages add cost and noise. Good retrieval is about getting the right few passages, and filtering out stale ones.
The similarity scores were computed with a real open embedding model (all-MiniLM-L6-v2). The assistant’s answers are simulated: they show what a careful assistant plausibly produces from each set of passages, not output from a live model.
